We are excited to offer this fixed term or secondment opportunity for one year to someone passionate about supporting young people to reach their full potential.
Roles and responsibilities
As the Independent Travel Trainer (ITT), you will report to the YILTS manager, and work with our SEN Children in developing their travel independence.
You’ll liaise with schools, transport officers and parents along the way, with every day being different. The successful candidate will enjoy variety and be able to work flexibly.
YILTS follows a process which we personalise for every student and we tend to work with young people over a half term to support reaching their independent travel goal. The YILTS team also run successful independent travel groups in schools.
Skills
The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills being able to comfortably speak with young people with additional needs and their families as well as liaise with other professionals. You will be able to swiftly move from discussing Pokemon or Harry Potter to contributing to EHCP meetings in an MDT setting.
The candidate will be Self-reliant – having the ability to make decisions using own initiative, constantly updating training approach to best meet the needs of the young person being trained. The trainer is responsible for completing formal risk assessments as well as completing continual and dynamic risk assessments during sessions.
What we offer
Hybrid working arrangements are available for this role. The team is based at west offices and the ITT will work in the community, in schools and from home. The successful candidate will be flexible and willing and able to lone work. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to complete an Accredited Travel Training qualification.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C1: Can express themselves fluently and spontaneously, almost effortlessly. Only a conceptually difficult subject can hinder a natural, smooth flow of language.

Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.
