10 PA Fixed-Term Appointment (6 Months)

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Locum Consultant Haematologist with a special interest in Myeloid Disorders, Paroxysmal Nocturnal Haemoglobinuria (PNH) and General Haematology. This is a 10 PA fixed-term appointment for 6 months, available as soon as possible.

This post offers an exciting opportunity to join a highly regarded and collaborative haematology team within one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in the UK. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting specialist myeloid and PNH services whilst contributing to the delivery of high-quality general haematology care.

Role and Responsibilities

The post-holder will work closely with the established Myeloid Team (Dr Jain, Dr Teh and Dr Khan) and will also have opportunities to support the nationally recognised PNH Service (Dr Kelly, Dr Griffin, Dr Muss and Dr Munir).

The successful candidate will contribute to:

• Specialist inpatient and outpatient care for patients with myeloid disorders and/or PNH.
• General Haematology services, including outpatient clinics and inpatient consultations.
• Participation in the consultant on-call rota (approximately 1:12).
• Provision of advisory and liaison haematology services across Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
• Referral triage, advice and guidance services for hospital clinicians and primary care colleagues.
• Shared responsibility for benign and general haematology pathways.

There will be opportunities to become involved in:

• Regional and local Myeloid Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings.
• National PNH MDT discussions.
• PNH outreach clinics.
• Clinical research and trials, with Leeds Haematology actively recruiting to a broad portfolio of commercial and non-commercial studies.
• Teaching, training and service development initiatives.

The successful applicant should hold accreditation in MBBS or an equivalent medical qualification from the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Job Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to fill this vacant 10PA locum post within the busy Department of Haematology at St James’s University Hospital.

In relation to this post, the appointee will specifically be helping to further develop and support Myeloid services (Acute Leukaemia’s, Myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disorders). Myeloid team provides level 3 service to Leeds, Harrogate and Huddersfield patients and works closely with the bone marrow transplant team and CAR-T team. Myeloid service is a busy inpatient and outpatient service with multiple clinical trials running which recruit locally and regionally. We also support and advise our regional colleagues on patient management and provide region-wide MDT services for patients with myeloid disorders. They will join a large and established team delivering the full breadth of haematology services across Yorkshire and beyond with extensive research activity. We also provide TYA services of myeloid malignancies for the region, including East Yorkshire.

The post holder will work with colleagues in the Myeloid team to help provide and support this large established service. Consultant staffing currently is Dr Manish Jain, Dr Chun Teh, Dr Richard Kelly (Myeloid and PNH), Dr Anjum Khan (Myeloid and transplant) and Dr Quentin Hill (Red cell disorder). The service is also supported by number of other consultants (including Dr Catherine Cargo (HMDS), Dr Marina Karakantza (Transfusion), Dr Alesia Kahn (HMDS) and Dr Katja Kimberger (ALL CAR-T). The post holder will have some shared input into benign General Haematology services, which may include hospital and GP liaison, referral review / triage and provision of advice and guidance. The post will also have some input in inpatient and outpatient red cell disorder work.

What you will bring to the role

The appointee’s role will be to further develop and support the established specialist services in Leeds for Myeloid and Red Cell Disorders in Haematology. The main clinical focus will be in Myeloid (Leukaemia) however the postholder will also have significant duties within the MPD clinic and in the support of benign red cell haematology. This will include Myeloid inpatient cover.

The appointee will be based principally at St James’s University Hospital with responsibilities as a member of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Clinical and

The laboratory haematology consultant team is providing an integrated pan-Leeds service. The post duties will include inpatient care, outpatient clinic work and a

shared on-call commitment (approx. 1:11). The post-holder will be part of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust haematology team, providing advisory and

liaison haematology services in their area of expertise. There may be occasional need to visit other areas of the trust (e.g., Leeds General Infirmary and other sites

within the city) but no regular commitments occur out with the St James’s site.

We provide inpatient high-dose chemotherapy for patient in Leeds, Harrogate, Huddersfield, and York (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia) including newer

immunotherapies. We are also regional CAR-T service for eligible people with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia.

The post holder may support the national PNH service (this will be fully supported by the Leeds PNH team) or may have more involvement in general / non-malignant haematology services with a reduced involvement in the PNH service. This can be tailored to individual preference and experience. This will be discussed at the time of the interview.
