The Role

We are seeking an experienced Clerk of Works Mechanical & Electrical to provide technical assurance and oversight across a diverse and operational estate.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled building services professional to play a key role in ensuring that mechanical and electrical works are delivered safely, compliantly and to the required quality standards.

The successful candidate will work across approximately 100 operational and specialist buildings, providing in-house technical assurance, undertaking site inspections, overseeing contractors and monitoring compliance across construction, refurbishment, planned and reactive maintenance, and major installations.

You will work closely with project managers, engineers, consultants, contractors and other technical specialists to maintain high standards across the estate and support the successful delivery of projects and maintenance programmes.

The role will be based primarily in the Wakefield area, with regular travel required throughout West Yorkshire.

Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant and effective delivery of mechanical and electrical works across the estate.

Key duties will include:

  • Supervising mechanical and electrical elements of construction, refurbishment, repair and maintenance projects.
  • Carrying out site inspections, audits, validations and compliance monitoring.
  • Ensuring works comply with approved designs, specifications, legislation and industry best practice.
  • Supporting the delivery of M&E engineering projects, including planned and reactive maintenance and minor works.
  • Liaising with contractors, consultants and internal teams to resolve technical issues and maintain consistent standards.
  • Monitoring the performance of mechanical and electrical systems, including Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Reviewing and working with tender specifications, contract documentation, technical drawings and project requirements.
  • Identifying technical and compliance risks and ensuring appropriate corrective action is taken.
  • Escalating significant issues where required.
  • Undertaking building condition and dilapidation surveys to support asset management and future project planning.
  • Witnessing testing and commissioning of new mechanical and electrical installations.
  • Providing technical advice and guidance to project teams and colleagues.
  • Supporting the improvement and accuracy of asset and building information.
Skills & Experience

To succeed in this role, you will need:

  • Strong practical knowledge of mechanical and electrical building services.
  • Experience working as a Clerk of Works, Building Services Engineer, M&E Engineer or in a similar technical role.
  • Experience overseeing and coordinating mechanical and electrical contractors.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant industry regulations, standards and Health & Safety legislation.
  • Experience working with technical specifications, tender scopes, contract documentation and engineering drawings.
  • Ability to inspect and assess completed and ongoing works against agreed specifications and standards.
  • Experience of testing, commissioning and validating mechanical and electrical installations.
  • Strong technical problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to provide clear and practical technical advice to contractors, consultants and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout West Yorkshire as required.
Essential Criteria
  • Relevant mechanical or electrical building services engineering experience.
  • City & Guilds Level 3, ONC Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or equivalent professional experience and competency.
  • Strong understanding of current industry regulations, technical standards and Health & Safety requirements.
  • Demonstrable experience managing or coordinating mechanical and electrical contractors.
  • Ability to interpret and work from technical drawings, specifications and tender documentation.
  • Strong understanding of Building Regulations and relevant statutory requirements.
  • Excellent technical communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage a varied workload and work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a wider technical team.

Desirable:

  • Experience validating contractor payment applications.
  • Experience working within a large, complex or operational estate.
  • Experience of planned preventative maintenance (PPM) programmes.
  • Knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Experience undertaking condition or dilapidation surveys.
  • Experience witnessing testing and commissioning of M&E systems.
