Heavy Vehicle Technician (HGV Mechanic)


Location: Thirsk

Contract: Permanent. Contractually employed by NYFRS

Hours: Full Time, 37 to 42 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Salary & Allowances:

  • £30,024 - £35,412 per annum plus £5k market supplement for 37hr week (total £40,412)
  • Options for guaranteed weekly single time overtime of 3hrs or 5hrs, dependent on preference, plus £5k market supplement

o Up to £38,284 (40hr week) total £43,284 per annum

o Up to £40,199 (42hr week) total £45,199 per annum

  • On call allowance (up to £3,171 per annum)
  • Additional Out of Hours overtime at time & half or double time if called out

The Opportunity


We’re looking for a Heavy Vehicle Technician (HGV Mechanic) to join our team.


As a Heavy Vehicle Technician (HGV Mechanic), you’ll play a vital role in maintaining and servicing our fleet of heavy vehicles ensuring they are safe, reliable, and ready to support frontline emergency operations. You’ll work closely with transport leadership team and colleagues across the organisation to deliver high-quality, customer-focused services that meet key performance indicators and service level agreements.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Carry out servicing, inspections, repairs, and planned maintenance
  • Respond to service requests and attend breakdowns, providing both static and mobile support
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and organisational procedures
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and vehicle data
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers to achieve service outcomes
  • Contribute to service improvements and participate in key projects and initiatives

What we’re looking for:


  • Relevant qualifications in heavy vehicle maintenance and experience in a high-volume environment
  • Strong customer service and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders
  • Knowledge of statutory legislation and standards related to transport management (desirable)
  • Full current driving licence including L.G.V Category C licence (although training could be provided)
  • Familiarity with Health & Safety practices in a workshop setting
