We are currently recruiting for dedicated individuals to join our growing team in the Genomics Central Laboratory at Leeds St James’s University Hospital, as Clinical Scientists.

Working closely with colleagues at Leeds and across the wider North East and Yorkshire (NEY) region, you’ll be responsible for the:

• Delivery and scientific development of a high-quality diagnostic laboratory genetics service
• Scientific leadership in service provision for a specified clinical area
• Providing advice to consultants and other service users
Making contributions to shape national best-practice

Essential criteria

• HCPC-registered Clinical Scientist with evidenced Genomics experience (including Clinical Scientists from other STP disciplines); or
• Final year (or late second year) Clinical Scientist trainee on an accredited training programme (e.g. STP or equivalence) with evidenced genomic experience; or
• MSC or PHD in Genetics, with significant laboratory and analytical experience in a relevant clinical setting*; or
• HCPC-registered biomedical scientists (BMS) with genomics experience in a relevant clinical setting*

• 
  Would be appointed at an appropriate grade until HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist by portfolio submission via ACS which you should expect to be able to deliver within 12m.

Who we are

Our 160-strong workforce at Leeds St James Hospital provides the Leeds Central Genomics Laboratory for the NEY Genomic Laboratory Hub. The NEY GLH serves around 9 million patients regionally and brings together genomic expertise across NHS Trusts in Leeds, Newcastle and Sheffield. We also provide highly specialised tests for inherited cancers for the wider NHS.

The Leeds Central Genomics laboratory is responsible for delivering the high throughput Next Generation Sequencing facility for the GLH, based around NovaSeq, NextSeq550DX and Genexus platforms with associated technical and bioinformatics support to deliver an efficient service, in addition to a broad spectrum of equipment and technologies to support a full genomic laboratory.

Over £4m has been invested in new and cutting-edge equipment in the last four years.

The laboratory works closely with the Translational Genomics Unit, a joint LTHT and University of Leeds team who deliver research and service development with the genomics team: a particular focus at the moment is on long read sequencing technologies for both Rare Disease and Haemato-Oncology services.

With recent advances in our understanding of genetics and the availability of new technologies, we are in a better position than ever before to deliver effective diagnostic testing for inherited diseases and to facilitate an ever more targeted and personalised approach to cancer diagnostics and treatment.
