City Warden

Job description

Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent

Would you like to patrol the streets to maintain a safe environment for the citizens of Leicester?

Join us and you’ll contribute towards local environmental protection to achieve high standards of compliance with street scene legislation in the city. Working collaboratively with other officers, you’ll patrol the city to detect street scene offences and provide “on-street” advice to the public.

Carrying a rucksack containing protective equipment such as gloves and masks, you’ll be given a smartphone, radio, and pocketbook to carry out your role effectively. You’ll be supplied with a uniform to wear. As you’ll work across the city in all weathers, you’ll have access to vehicles and electric bikes.

This is a full time, permanent position working 37 hours per week. You’ll be required to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays. You'll need to have a full manual driving licence or be able to use your own vehicle if you have an automatic only driving license.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll help maintain a clean, attractive, and safe street scene environment. By participating in publicity and education campaigns about street scene issues you’ll work towards reducing the incidents of street scene and enviro-crime offences. You’ll issue fixed penalty notices and prepare reports and evidence for legal proceedings. You’ll liaise with managers and officers from various services such as Cleansing, Environmental Health, and Highway Management as well as the Police on a regular basis to share information.

What you'll need

With previous relevant enforcement experience, you’ll have experience of working the public, especially with a diverse range of people. Conversing with the public, you’ll demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills as well as high level of verbal communication skills. With tact and diplomacy, you’ll be able to effectively deal with irate or distressed customers whilst maintaining good customer care standards. Using excellent IT and written communication skills, you’ll be able to write reports, court files and letters. Self-motivated and enthusiastic, you’ll be committed to keeping our streets safe.

What we can offer you

As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We’ll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from a number of flexible benefits, including discounts on city buses and trains. For an illustrative value of your benefits package, take a look at our benefits calculator.
